Dream I ❄ video/action

[The video feed opens on a young boy sitting with his back to the carousel, staring curiously down at the device. His bright eyes blink, and he reaches up a hand to brush at the fringe of his auburn hair, grown long and a bit unruly. Strong, dark brows furrow, and his freckled nose wrinkles. He shakes his head and sets the device aside, offering a view of his outstretched legs.]

Meera? [A pause.] Jojen?

[He sighs.]

Summer? Summer, to me.

[Snuffling is heard, and the sound of paws scrabbling on pavement. And then a paw falls on the device, and the recording clicks off.]

[ooc: So uh, this child who looks like he can't be more than ten kind of can't, uhmm, walk. So someone might want to help him out.]

[Hanna looks around for anybody who looks like they'd be new...and the kid really, REALLY enjoying his PB&J stands out.]

Bran?

[He nods shyly.] Yes, it's me.

[Hanna smiles and crouches down to Bran's level, holding out his hand for him to shake.]

Hi, I'm Hanna. It's nice to meet you.

[Bran takes the offered hand briefly and smiles.] And you.

[Hanna just smiles and sits down. He then takes out his communicator device.]

I promised I'd explain this to you, didn't I?

[He nods, wide-eyed.]

I... I don't know much about magic.

[Hanna smiles.]

Well, I do...but this isn't magic. It's a sort of device that uses its own internal power source. And it lets you communicate with other people who have the same kinds of devices...everybody who lives in the City has one.

[Okay, so now he understands what they're for. He supposes it's nice to be able to talk to people who are somewhere else. But...] What sort of power?

[Hanna opens the back of his, showing off the battery and some of the wires.]

It uses these batteries here to generate electricity, which powers the device and allows it to be turned on and off. And the batteries have these long lives, so that you don't need to replace them every time you turn it on and off.

[Bran reaches out towards the batteries, but then he realises he's not sure if they're safe to touch or not.]

What are they?

It's okay, you can touch them! They're sort of like...little metal canisters. They've got this mix of chemicals and wires and stuff inside of them, which all react to each other and help to power this!

[Hanna smiles, before popping out one of the batteries, handing it to Bran.]

But it needs two of them. With only one, it won't turn on, because that's how it was built.

[He tries to turn it on, but lo, it will not work.]

[Bran rolls it in his fingers. Cool and smooth, and lighter than he imagined.]

Chemicals. And wires.

[He nods, and hands it back.]

Who builds them?

Electricians and mechanics, and people who work with electronics. I think these are mostly built in factories these days, though. I don't know much about how they're made...

[Hanna takes the battery back, putting it back in his communicator device.]

But I bet they've got books about how these things are made at the library!

[Bran's eyebrows knit together. He doesn't understand half of these words. Library, though, he gets that.]

Maybe I could look at them. I know how to read.

The library is great. Huge, too. I bet you'd like it there.

I like books.

I do too. Love em, they're fun.

You ever read comic books? They're like books, but they've got a lot of pictures in them, and the words work with the pictures to tell a story. They're also sort of smaller than books.

[Bran shakes his head, but there's wonder and intrigue in his eyes. Oh, they sound nice.]

Everything is so different here.

I know, it's a lot to take in...but I think you'll be okay, you know? I mean, when I first got here, I didn't know anybody, and I wasn't sure how things worked at all! I ended up living in a box for two days because I didn't know what I was doing!

You though? You've got people here that'll make sure you're okay. Me included.

[Hanna: Good with kids.]

So! Comic books! You'll love em!

[This is actually the most comforting thing Bran has heard in months, and a smile lights up his face.]

A doctor sent a chair. He said I can use it to move, so people haven't got to carry me.

[Aaaah, that explains the legs. He had a feeling there was a reason they were so straight...He gives Bran a grin.]

That's great! Wheelchairs really do make things easier, and the library is wheelchair accessible. If you want to, you could get those legs looked at. Things here are a bit different, so who knows, they could do something to fix them.

[It wouldn't last when Bran went home, but...well, who knew when that would be.[

You think... I could walk again?

I don't know for sure...but I wouldn't rule out the possibility of it happening when you're here.

[Bran tries to keep his face neutral, but it's easy to tell that his hopes are way, way up.]

I see.

I'm no doctor, sadly...but it can't hurt to ask one!
